Legislation in 1857 first allocated money to establish normal schools in Wisconsin and called for appointment of a Board of Regents of Normal Schools. For several years, moneys were distributed to existing schools which offered a normal class, but after the Civil War steps were taken to actually site new schools devoted to teacher training. The first to become operational was opened at Platteville in 1866. Eventually nine schools were established, at Eau Claire, La Crosse, Milwaukee, Oshkosh, Ri...
